About us

The German Steel Association (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl) represents the voice of Germany’s steel industry, which has committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2045. This ambitious goal could eliminate one-third of Germany’s total industrial greenhouse gas emissions.

Founded in 1874 and headquartered in Berlin, the association advocates for policies that enable Germany to transition to a climate-neutral steel industry while maintaining its competitive strength. With an annual production of approximately 35 million tons, Germany leads steel production in Europe.

The industries represented by the German Steel Association are essential to numerous value chains, including automotive manufacturing and mechanical engineering. Steel is integral to energy transition technologies, such as offshore wind turbines and electricity pylons. Nearly 70 percent of German exports consist of steel-intensive products.

The association actively contributes its expertise in energy, climate, economic, trade, environmental, and sustainability policies to discussions at federal, state, and EU levels. Through targeted communication efforts, it ensures that the steel industry gains public visibility.

The German Steel Association is a member of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), the European Steel Association (EUROFER), and the World Steel Association (worldsteel). It also participates in the Platform of Energy-Intensive Industries in Germany (EID) and the Alliance for the Future of Industry.
